 Jon Phillip Morris, 81, of Indianapolis, passed away January 3, 2023. He was born February 13, 1941, in Indianapolis to the late Russell and Dorothy (Kemp) Morris. He married Rebecca (Koenig) Morris at Garfield Park Baptist Church in Indianapolis on February 16, 1963.
He was a schoolteacher for 22 years, before becoming Principal of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Perry Township, retiring in 2003. Jon enjoyed being with family, supporting his grandchildren, and traveling. When his children were young, summer vacations were spent driving around the country—eventually visiting 49 states and their capitals, all the border provinces of Canada, and a dip into Mexico. After “retiring” he was twice elected to the Perry Township School Board. He also joined the faculty of Indiana Wesleyan University as student teacher supervisor. He wrote, “Education Has Been My Life.” And it truly was. Jon is survived by his wife Becky; his children: Jeffrey (and his wife Kimberly) Morris, of Mooresville, Melissa (and her husband David) McSorley, of Greenwood; his grandchildren: Connor (and his wife Amy) Morris, of Indianapolis, Caroline (and her husband Jake) Habig, of Greenwood, Cameron (Sydney) McSorley, of Indianapolis, Logan McSorley, of Greenwood, and Rebecca McSorley of Greenwood; and sister, Alice Putz, of Indianapolis. Jon was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Alexis McSorley. Visitation will be at 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., followed by a service at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Christ United Methodist Church, 8540 U.S. Highway 31 South, Indianapolis. Arrangements have been entrusted to Community Funeral Care.
